I arrived to play golf yesterday and was greeted by and extremely friendly woman who was working in the pro shop. I let her know what group I was and she rang me up. I signed my credit card slip but she was also printing out another ticket.
“I just have one other thing for you to sign. It’s our golf cart agreement”, she said.
“Can I walk”, I asked? (I really don’t like taking a cart)
“Well, you can”, she said, “but almost no one does. There are places where you have to walk almost straight up.”
“That’s okay, we’re pretty hearty.”
“Alright, well if you change your mind after nine holes, just let me know and we’ll set you up then.”
I’ve played some pretty hilly golf courses before. I’ve also played some that had a long way between the holes. There are very few that I’ve played where I wished I would have taken a cart. I would say that yesterday’s round is one of those times. There were some incredibly steep and sustained climbs. I was also carrying my bag, so I’ve got an extra 25 pounds on my back as I made my way up to some of the tee boxes. There were several times when I needed to take 5 minutes on the tee to just catch my breath after climbing up there.
The course was beautiful though. I saw multiple deer and some wild turkey. There was a beach mist that blanketed the course for the first 12 holes. It unfortunately changed to rain for the last 6 holes, so by the time we were finished we were soaked. The score didn’t really matter though. It’s the kind of course where you can’t score well until you’ve played it a few times and learned where to hit your shots. I would recommend if you are ever in Brookings, you should definitely play Salmon Run.
I'd llove to walk that one with you sometime. I have no desire to hit golf balls, but some golf courses are as beautiful as any walk one can find that is not deep in the woods. Glad you enjoyed your exercise.
