I went out to dinner last night to a churrascaria, or Brazilian steakhouse. I went to the Espetus Churrascaria in San Francisco. The word churrascaria is Portuguese for “barbecue restaurant”. I love these kinds of places. I have been to a few different ones over the years and the concept is the same, servers carving you meat off of a skewer at your table. They bring out lots of different kinds of meats and you can sample until your heart, or stomach, is content. I always eat way too much and last night was no exception.
There is always a salad bar where you can get various kinds of things to go with the upcoming onslaught of meat. There are soups and potato dishes. There are lots of salads, both vegetable and pasta kinds. Last night’s place had some cured meats. I always walk up there, mostly because that’s the only way to get a plate. I don’t take much though. I might get some very small amount of a potato dish, like maybe some French fries. Last night I took a small amount of salami, 2 asparagus spears, 1 slice of tomato, and 1 sun dried tomato. It was pushed over to one side of my plate not taking up too much room. It shouldn’t take up too much room on my plate, just like it won’t take up to much room in my gut. I’ll be needed all of that space for meat.
Back at the table there is always some sort of sign that you use to let the servers know that you’re ready for them to start bringing things. Last night there was a little wheel that you turned. When green was up, they come, when red is up, they stop. When we were back from the salad bar I quickly announced, “Let’s get this party started!” I rolled the wheel to green and settled in for the feast. Over the next 30 minutes or so I had grilled sirloin (twice), filet mignon, pork loin, flank steak (twice), steak in red wine sauce, grilled pineapple, lamb chops, a chicken leg, grilled shrimp, pork sausage, and 1 chicken heart. It was all fantastic. I really love this stuff.
After dinner as we drove back to the hotel I could feel all of the meat rumbling around in my stomach. I felt sick. I couldn’t believe that I had eaten as much as I had. I can’t resist though. There is something in my brain that just won’t say “no” until I literally can’t stuff in another bite. I need to go exercise now. I have and extra 10,000 calories that need to be burned off. I have to work hard to get rid of them, because I know that I’ll be back to another churrascaria in the future and the cycle will repeat.
You really wasted a lot of eating time going to the salad bar to (in your words)... "that's the only way to get a plate."
ReplyDeleteNext time turn the wheel to green and eat with your hands- cowboy style.
