Old Friends

I love it when I hear that old friends are going to be in town.  I got an email yesterday from one of my oldest friends letting me know that he was going to be in town on business.   The first email I got from him was just a copy of his itinerary.   There was no other note.   No, “I’m going to be in town and would like to see you.”   There was just an itinerary that showed that he would be in Portland for about 20 hours.
The truth is that’s all he needed to send.  I didn’t need to know why he was coming.  He didn’t need to ask if I was available.   There are some friends that you will just drop what you’re doing and make yourself available for.   Friendship like that is earned over long periods of time.   I have lots of friends but only a few really close ones.   Most of my friends would need to call.    They would at least need to ask what I was doing and if I could meet them.   This one didn’t need to do that.   He could just send me copy of his itinerary and I started getting ready to see him.
I wish I had more friends like that.   The problem is, it just takes too long to make them.

  1. I think all "friends" are like that. Only acquaintances need to let us know so we can prepare.
I know you know that a friend is one of the great valuables of life. A treasure -immeasurable and priceless. You are to be envied for being that kind of friend - knowing the time it takes.
